Cleary can’t stick the conversion from the sideline and after looking so comfortable for much of the half, the Panthers roar back to trail by just two going into the second. The Rabbitohs need to find some discipline in a hurry or they will be roadkill.
And that’s the second try that has come from a speculative kick from Momirovski! Crichton with the athletic take and put-down and that’s the quality of the Panthers. But Souths have been their own worst enemy as well, three penalties in a row and two of them were from hands in the face. That’s madness and they reaped what they sowed there.
And that gives Penrith a very good chance to level scores before halftime, just four minutes left in the opening stanza. Kikau has been very good in that interchange role but nothing comes of that, the little Cleary mini-bomb is harmless and Luai comes up with the fumble.
He does a lot of good things, the big Rabbitohs forward, but ball security isn’t one of them. And now the Panthers are OVER! Nathan Cleary on the end of that and they make something out of nothing. Costly mistake from Souths as Paul Momirovski is set free then kicks back inside for his halfback. Panthers back in the contest, it’s 12-6 to the Rabbitohs.
As Penrith make those changes, Kurt Capewell in the centres as well. Now here we go, Kikau has mucked up the play-the-ball and given Souths a golden chance to get a third try.
Head clash with Kikau, who is in play, and he hits the deck hard. That’s the end of his night by the looks of that replay, so a reshuffle ahead for Penrith. Pangai Jnr in the fray now as Ivan Cleary tries to move a few deck chairs.
Right on the button. Kicked from the 35m line and about 5cm inside the 20m zone. Big chance here for Souths and they deliver! Latrell Mitchell is over for the Rabbitohs and they are here to send a message tonight. Terrific flick pass from Keaon Koloamatangi, who ran an excellent line, and Mitchell just loomed up and smashed over. Reynolds makes it 12-0 after starting that all with his long kick.
And Souths let them know about it as well as they give Brent Naden a reminder about that knock-on from the scrum play. Plenty of fire here and that’s what you would expect from both sides given the high stakes game. Big chase there from Souths and they want the Panthers to know they are up for this physically, although with Kikau and Pangai on the bench they have a bit of firepower up their sleeve.
That was a costly error from Dylan Edwards. Loses it in contact and Cody Walker sets up Dane Gagai on the left-hand side. Terrific start for Souths, Gagai needed a bit of wizardry to get that ball down but down it goes. Reynolds hooks the kick badly but it’s 6-0 to South Sydney.
Cameron Murray earns the penalty for the Rabbitohs and Adam Reynolds does the honours. That’s simple for a man of his talents and he guides it through for an early advantage.
